   The People Make the Difference

   We love The Glenridge!
   Not that there are not other communities of gray-haired folks to love. However, we just love this Life Fulfilling Community called, The Glenridge. While lovely, the bricks and mortar are not what makes our community loveable; it is the people! The good folks who live here are the community’s most valuable asset. Our neighbors make this life style of gracious and meaningful living a genuine treasure.

   Recently my wife Joan has been diagnosed with a serious illness. Not a day goes by that someone does not call, visit or ask about her condition. Flowers, cards and well wishes stream into our home (including some delicious soup). The support of the Glenridge family, both members and staff, has been immense.
   Nowhere else could people of only four years acquaintanceship play such an important role in a neighbor’s day-to-day of living.
   This people-to-people concern is what adds incredible value to every Life Fulfilling Community. We tell visitors that one of the reasons we moved to The Glenridge was to be with folks our own age. You know – the ones with the receding hairline. Enjoyable folks we could socialize with and share some of the same concerns we of the gray hair variety have.

   When visitors say, “Nice place but I’m not ready,” our standard response has always been… “You’re not ready for …. (reciting all the programs, classes and opportunities)? Now, we have found a new reason. Now we say “It is the people” at The Glenridge make the difference!
   This is one of the best reasons to consider moving to a Life Fulfilling Community. The friendliness of the people offers a hidden advantage that means so much to both long time members and newcomers.So thanks to all members and staff for their concern. Moreover, do not forget— “The Glenridge advantage – the people!”

   In the June 20, 2009 issue of the Wall Street Journal there was an excellent article on the pros and cons of choosing to live in a planned community for older adutls or CCRC. The article highlighted the challenges facing growing numbers of older adults and they plan for how to deal with possible healthcare challenges for themselves or family members.

   While the article addresses costs and services, it did not address the quality of life issues being addressed here by George Measer. In spite of a growing body of evidence that one’s aging self-esteem or positive aging attitude has much today with both quality of life and longevity, the media continues to perpetuate the myth that communities are basically for those already in declining health…or will be due to some trigger event. This is simply not true.

   The community life Mr. Measer describes may not be for everyone; but everyone should thoroughly investigate all of their options. Get to know the George Measers of the world and listen to their stories That is where you will discover the real value of a planned future in a planned community of like minded people.
